Widening participation
Access to good employment opportunities for local communities is crucial for maximising an integrated care system's (ICSs) impact on improving population health, healthcare outcomes, reducing inequalities, increasing productivity and value for money, and supporting broader social and economic development.
Anchor approaches play an essential role by connecting the social determinants of health, such as employment, with the core functions of health and care institutions. Anchor approaches to employment should not be viewed as a separate programme they should be seen as a way to us existing assets more effectively. For example, encouraging young people to join health and care careers to create a sustainable workforce; adopting inclusive recruitment strategies to help tackle inequities; and collaborating with partners working to achieve better outcomes for all. These are all important actions for employers to consider as they develop their anchor institutions.
In line with the ICS people function guidance, all ICSs will receive support to build partnerships for developing a sustainable supply of locally recruited staff, support the health of communities and reduce inequalities.
Using the examples throughout our hub can support you to maximise your employment offer and social impact in your local area.
