Consultation on the regulation of NHS managers

Details of the consultation and how to have your say about regulating NHS managers and new whistleblowing protections.

5 December 2024

The government has launched a public consultation seeking views on proposals to regulate NHS managers ensuring they follow professional standards and are held to account. The Department of Health and Social Care will also consult on whether to introduce a new professional duty of candour on managers and, in addition, make managers accountable for responding to patient safety concerns.

We are working with employers to understand the implications of government proposals regarding the regulation of managers and the introduction of a new professional duty of candour. We are collating an employer’s response to the proposal and we are seeking views from chief executive officers, chief people officers and senior board workforce leaders on behalf of your organisation or as an individual.

Join our webinar

We invite chief executive officers, chief people officers and senior board workforce leaders to join our webinar on Friday 10 January 2025. During the webinar we will discuss the proposed regulations to support our response and you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts.  Register your attendance on our web page

What the proposals cover:

  1. Regulation that prevents NHS managers with a record of poor performance or misconduct from working in healthcare.
  2. Introduction of a statutory duty of candour which would make NHS managers legally accountable for responding to concerns about patient safety.
  3. Hold NHS managers to account when they do not listen to individuals who raise concerns or endanger patient safety.
