Honorary Contract Template

An honorary contract template for health and care organisations to download and use.

11 March 2024

An honorary contract can be used for individuals coming for a period of work, research or training at your organisation, but will not be paid directly by the organisation.

Our NHS Education and Training Network flagged that no honorary contract to T Level students, those with extended work experience or volunteering existed. So we sourced a sample contract from colleagues, adapted it and got it approved by legal advisors for use in your workplaces.

When to use the honorary contract template

This contract was primarily created to support organisations who wish to host T Level students on an industry placement and should be used in conjunction with the T Level and industry placement guidance from the Gov.UK website. Should your organisation wish to make payments to the placement student, guidance is available on making payments to students.

We recommend that employers and providers take the time to explain the importance of an honorary contract and discuss how the sections of the document are reflective of contracts students will encounter in their careers. This is crucial as some young people may find the language used in an honorary contract difficult or unsettling. Reassurance may be needed to convey that the honorary contract is designed to set expectations in the workplace and how important this is in a health and care environment where they will be interacting with patients.

For those who are starting their journey of hosting students on industry placement, we have a dedicated T Level hub that shares guidance and case studies. You can find information on local schools and colleges that offer T Levels on the Gov.uk website. Before hosting any industry placements an employer must ensure that suitable insurance is in place.

The template can be opened and downloaded in Word format.

Whilst the contract has been reviewed by our legal advisors, we recommend that any organisation wishing to use the contract has it reviewed by their own legal teams.
