Updates to employment checks standards with eVisa guidance

Right to work and identity checks will be impacted by the Home Office’s rollout of eVisas.

6 January 2025

NHS Employers has updated two employment check standards to incorporate the changes to some of the requirements and processes, namely the use of eVisas and expired biometric residence permits (BRPs) as acceptable documents for employment checking purposes.

The updates have been made to our right to work checks standard and identity checks standard in response to UK Visas and Immigration's (UKVI) development of a digital-by-default immigration system.

This replaces physical documents with an online record known as an eVisa. The implementation of this began last year and will affect how employers conduct employment checks on some international recruits.

References to what has changed can be found in the summary updates section at the bottom of each webpage.

Our e-learning resource has also been updated to reflect the amendments and we have added questions to our FAQ page to further assist employers.
