Residential and day care (social care) job profile consultation

Consultation on revisions to the national job matching profiles for 'social care - residential and day care'.

31 July 2024

The NHS Staff Council’s Job Evaluation Group (JEG) is consulting on proposed revisions to the national job matching profiles for residential and day care services. Employers have until 30 September to provide feedback.

JEG has reviewed and amended these profiles at the request of stakeholders in Northern Ireland, where they are most commonly used. All amendments have been driven by changes to the way in which staff are deployed and the additional caring duties required of some assistant roles.

The table below summarises the changes made:

Current Profile Title Band Proposed title Comment
Care Assistant Amendments to profile to reflect current deployment models
Driver with Caring Duties 3a Changes to factor levels informed by evidence from the service mean that this profile increases to band 3
Residential Carer  3b Changed to incorporate day centre roles
Day Centre Carer Archive – roles can match to the profile above
Social Work Assistant Practitioner (Residential) 5a Amendments to profile to reflect current deployment models
Day Centre Carer (Higher Level/Team Leader) 5b Changed to incorporate residential roles
Residential Carer Team Leader Archive – roles can match to the profile above
Social Work Residential 6a Amendments to profile to reflect current deployment models
Day Centre Manager 6b Amendments to profile to reflect current deployment models
Social Care Team Manager (Adult Residential) Amendments to profile to reflect current deployment models

This comparison document details all the changes being proposed.

    • The current profile 'driver with caring duties' has been restructured and revised leading to it increasing to band 3.  This means there will be two band 3 profiles for care workers – one of which will include driving.
    • Profiles at band 3 and 5 have been revised to ensure they cover both residential and day care, meaning that the previous profiles can be archived as all future jobs should match to the new combined profile.
    • Profile labels (titles) have been removed as evidence showed they were confusing panels and leading to profiles not being selected for jobs they may be relevant for.
    • The full factor level definition has been included rather than a truncated version – JEG is aware that profiles are often used and viewed by people other than training panel practitioners so wanted to ensure that the wording was comprehensive.
    • The way in which the bold and non-bold text is displayed has also been changed for the same reason.

JEG is now consulting on these changes and is particularly interested to hear from organisations providing residential and day care services about whether the revisions will be helpful for job matching their roles.
