New joint pain programme launched

The government to collaborate with Nuffield Health to launch a rehabilitation programme.

10 March 2025

This new programme supports the ambition to build an NHS that is fit for the future and allows for our valued workforce to stay well at work.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the second leading cause of absence among NHS staff, and this initiative will help individuals regain their quality of life and focus on reducing waiting list times.

In August 2024, more than two million days were lost due to NHS staff sickness. Back and MSK problems led to over 314,000 lost days and over 10,000 staff off work. Nuffield Health’s programme has already benefitted 35,000 people, and participants experienced a 35 per cent improvement in joint pain and a 37 per cent improvement in joint function after taking part in 2024.

Initially, the programme will be available across ten trusts in London, Birmingham, and the North West, and Nuffield Health will identify individuals who are eligible for support from these trusts. Individuals selected will partake in a twelve-week rehabilitation programme followed by twelve weeks of free access to Nuffield Health fitness facilities.
