GMC update on preparing for regulation of PAs and AAs

The General Medical Council (GMC) has updated on how feedback has informed the process of regulation of PAs and AAs.

5 December 2024

The GMC has published an article to update how feedback has shaped its approach on the regulation of physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs).

Earlier this year, the GMC requested the views through a public consultation on the proposed rules, standards and guidance that will support the regulation of PAs and AAs.

In 2019, the UK government has asked the GMC to take responsibility for PAs and AAs so it has worked with a wide range of organisations to represent patients, doctors, PAs, AAs, employers and educators to develop the policies and processes for the regulations to begin. The GMC also commissioned research involving focus groups and interviews across the UK.

The regulation for PAs and AAs comes into effect on 13 December 2024.

You can read more about this on the GMC's website.
