Doctors in training vote to accept the government’s pay offer

The British Medical Association (BMA) has announced that its doctors in training members have voted in favour of the government’s offer.

17 September 2024

On the 16 September, the BMA Resident Doctor Committee (formerly the BMA Junior Doctors Committee) has reported a majority yes vote with 66 per cent of respondents voting to accept the terms.  This ends the dispute between the BMA Resident Doctor Committee and government.

The offer has been designed to reform the pay for resident doctors, and includes measures aimed at improving the experiences of resident doctors in England.

The pay increases are scheduled to be paid in November 2024 and will include the DDRB pay uplift which will also be backdated to 1 April 2024.

Next steps

The BMA Resident Doctors Committee has now terminated the current trade disputes in relation to doctors in training in England. Further information about how the offer will be taken forward will be shared as soon as possible.

The BMA will withdraw the rate card, for doctors in training in England, with immediate effect.

An implementation group will now be formed to discuss other detailed elements of the deal, including the flexible pay premia uplifts and a set of work on the exception reporting process.

A separate group will form, led by the Department of Health and Social Care, to review the training model concerning the number and frequency of rotations.
