Survey launched on faith and belief in the NHS

Take part in this survey which is open to all NHS staff and help the NHS shape more inclusive and respectful workplaces.

16 December 2024

NHS Employers is working with Dr Ying Fei Héliot of the University of Surrey to research the views and experiences of staff about religious expression in the workplace. As part of this primary research, we want to better understand the impact of faith and belief staff networks on staff wellbeing and access to quiet spaces.

  • The survey is open to anyone working in the NHS from any background, with or without a faith or belief.
  • We are particularly interested in increasing the number of responses from frontline staff, as response rates were lower from this group in phase one research conducted in 2023.
  • It’s important the survey results reflect the views of everyone who works in the NHS. Please encourage your staff to take part in this anonymous survey by 31 March 2025. We anticipate that the survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
  • If you completed this survey in 2023 there is no need to complete it again.

These insights are even more significant following the summer riots and the increase we have witnessed this year in violence, antisemitism, racism and Islamophobia. We know these events impact staff working within the NHS, especially those who visibly represent, or appear to represent, a religious group.

The survey findings will be analysed by the University of Surrey, following which recommendations will be published in 2025 to help NHS organisations improve staff experience and shape more inclusive and respectful workplaces through effective use of staff networks.

For further information please email Dr Ying Fei Héliot at y.heliot@surrey.ac.uk

    • There is very little information known at national level about faith and belief in the NHS workforce. We hope to gather some rich and detailed feedback that will help NHS organisations better understand religious expression and the role of faith and belief staff networks in the NHS.  This will allow us to publish recommendations to support organisations to be more inclusive and supportive of religious expression.
    • This is the second phase of research, following a preliminary survey in 2023
    • The aim of phase two is to broaden the reach to include more responses from frontline staff and also support a more detailed analysis of results by region and trust-type comparisons, the findings of which will be published in 2025.
    • If your organisation obtains a 10 per cent response rate from staff, the University of Surrey will provide an individual organisational analysis of your results. This will help you to gain valuable insight into your organisation and help you to shape a more inclusive and respectful workplace.
  • To help you spread the word and promote the survey across your organisation please use our draft articles, poster and Powerpoint slide to help us reach a wider audience.
