Get involved in LGBT+ History Month 2024
The campaign is celebrated across the NHS to increase the visibility of the entire LGBTQ+ community, as well as their history and experience.
This year’s national theme is #UnderTheScope, celebrating LGBT+ people’s contribution to medicine and healthcare – with a focus on LGBTQ+ health inequalities and the amazing work of LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals.
The NHS England equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) improvement plan recognises the importance of NHS leaders creating an organisational culture where everyone feels they belong, including LGBTQ+ colleagues. This is vital as the NHS Staff Survey demonstrated one in five LGBTQ+ staff experienced violence from patients or relatives, compared to one in seven of their colleagues, with bisexual and transgender staff experiencing particularly high rates of violence.
During LGBT+ History Month, NHS organisations have the opportunity to demonstrate how they are taking action to support LGBTQ+ equality in the workplace. Organisations are encouraged to run their own local campaign to not only celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ+ staff, but also to educate, raise awareness and help create a more inclusive culture.
