Legal advice in relation to the summer 2024 riots

Legal guidance which provides advice on handling the conduct of NHS staff outside the workplace.

9 August 2024

Given the recent civil unrest, we have developed guidance on how to deal with employees who may have been involved in racist or criminal activity, either physically, or on social media.

We have worked alongside NHS England and have commissioned our legal partners, Capsticks, to produce this guidance to help support a consistent approach when having to deal with incidents involving NHS staff and their conduct outside the workplace.

The guidance provides advice on managing staff involved in:

  • police investigations
  • the misuse of social media.

Please note: This guidance will need to be used in conjunction with your internal policies and the professional Codes of Conduct from professional bodies.
