Vaccination and immunisation

The national arrangements for the delivery of vaccination and immunisation (V&I) programmes by general practices in England can be found in this section.

Immunisation is one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions and a cornerstone of public health. High immunisation rates are key to preventing the spread of infectious disease, complications and possible early death among individuals, and protecting the population’s health through both individual and herd immunity.

Following recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI), a number of programmes are commissioned for delivery by general practice. This includes those which are legally directed by the Secretary of State for Health to establish or offer, and those NHS England has prescribed. Some enhanced services (ES) delivered by GMS practices have payments directed in the statement of financial entitlements (SFE). The full set of enhanced services can be found on the NHS England webpage.

Commissioners and practices can subscribe, free of charge, to Public Health England's 'Vaccine Update' newsletter. This is published monthly and contains useful updates on the latest developments in vaccines and vaccination policies and procedures in England. When downloading or registering for the vaccine update, commissioners and practices can also register for other updates including Green Book updates, medical device.

The programmes covered by the GMS contract are as follows:

  • childhood immunisation (target programme)
  • childhood seasonal influenza vaccination
  • hepatitis B (new born babies)
  • human papillomavirus (HPV) booster
  • pertussis (pregnant women)

  • meningococcal C (MenC) (freshers)
  • meningococcal C booster
  • rotavirus (routine childhood immunisation)
