In May and June, we met with health and wellbeing leads from across England in London and Leeds to find out what is happening across different NHS organisations.
Four trusts spoke about what they are doing in certain areas, from creating a new strategy to implementing Schwartz Rounds. We also heard from NHS England on their work programme and an update from Health Education England on the Making Every Contact Count programme.
In the meetings, we looked at our three priority areas for this year:
- Mental health
- Sickness absence
- Musculoskeletal issues
We ran a workshop to find out what some of the key challenges were in each of these areas, the good practice already out there and how it can be replicated, and what the evidence base says. We looked at defining a system wide objective for each of the three areas.
Some of the key themes discussed were:
- the need for board engagement and line manager training
- the need for investment in new approaches
- the need for a common language across the NHS in these areas
- the importance of analysing data to inform your strategy.
