The Government's Health visitor implementation plan 2011 - 2015: A call to action, set out an ambitious challenge for employers to develop and grow the workforce by 4,200 health visitors in England over four years.
NHS Employers organisation has done a lot of work over the life of A call to action to support health visiting service providers to deliver the Implementation Plan. We did this by providing you with up-to-date information, guidance and tools to help you meet your trajectories and achieve the new health visiting service. We also attended various steering groups and used our understanding of local issues to effectively represent employers and the health visitor (HV) workforce. Our engagement with you happened through a range of formats:

As the HV implementation plan has now come to an end, so has NHS Employers activity to support providers with specific HV workforce issues. The programme and its models for delivery are being evaluated, and will inform our future work. All the resources developed during the life of the programme are still freely available through this HV workforce hub.

Our health visiting share and learn network

NHS Employers HV share and learn network was a forum for health visiting service and workforce managers with responsibility for delivering A call to action. It offered them the opportunity to network and discuss local challenges and opportunities associated with growing and developing the workforce in a safe and supportive environment. NHS Employers used the opportunity to meet with the network to update members, and gather their views on national policy direction, and to develop tools and resources to help them meet the workforce challenges they were facing. The last share and learn network meeting was held in July 2015.  Thanks to all who made it the success it was.

Our offer of tailored health visiting support

in 2014, NHS Employers provided tailored support to 30 NHS provider organisations of health visiting services. The aim was to help them to implement evidence based strategies to retain the health visitor workforce. All these providers were offered support to develop a workforce development plan to assist with the growth of the overall health visitor workforce. We gained rich information from the providers, which have been incorporated into our tips on these pages. Thanks to all those involved for their enthusiasm and cooperation. Support for providers to implement the plans we developed with them, is now being offered by the Institute of Health Visiting.
