Steven Weeks, policy manager at NHS Employers, has produced a short guide to the key staff engagement websites in the UK
NHS staff are very busy people so I thought it might be helpful to identify some of the key UK staff engagement websites.
Leaving aside those which are primarily commercial or personal blogs giving individual perspectives my main focus is those which offer useful information, practical ideas or draw on experience from outside the NHS.
- Top of the list is Engage for Success an organisation which brings together specialists in employee engagement across public and private sectors. It has a wealth of information, case studies and useful tools. It is mostly based on private sector examples but there are many lessons that can be applied even in a different context. There is also a range of generic material and research reports as well as opportunities to contribute to the work of E4S. The website is updated regularly and there is a wider range of interesting comment pieces as well as facts and figures.
- The Improvement and Participation Association (IPA) focus on the theme of improving involvement. The website focusses on organisations can develop and support employees to be involved at work. This is an area where the NHS score isn’t as good as other sectors. The website has in depth information on how involvement is fostered in range of employer organisations. It also has useful bulletin you can subscribe to and useful range of reports.
- My next recommendation may seem a curious one as it is not specifically a staff engagement website. Care Quality Commission publish inspection reports for NHS organisations. This includes an assessment of how well led an organisation is including its approach to staff engagement. Although it can be a bit cumbersome to find the information it is potentially a rich source of data on experiences across the NHS. Information can be accessed for individual organisations or types of organisation. To help make best use of this data we regularly monitor this and tweet about interesting examples
- My final suggestion offers a wealth of data on the experience of the Listening into Action approach to staff engagement, which has been implemented at over eighty NHS organisations. The blog discusses the experiences of the organisations working with LIA and includes impressive examples of impact and practical case studies. It is regularly updated.
Other websites to consider are the CIPD, ACAS and other general HR sites, as these sometimes have information on staff engagement issues.
The Kings Fund and the Point of Care Foundation have also published useful reports on staff engagement in the past.
NHS Employers keeps an eye on all relevant websites and regularly shares useful information on twitter. Follow me to find out more. Do you know of any websites that have helpful guidance and staff engagement resources? Let us know and we can add them to our resource section. Finally we come to our very own website with staff engagement news, case studies, blogs, analysis tools and much more.
But you already know that because you are reading this!
